Our apprenticeships offer more than just 'doing tax'

Kelly George sitting at her desk ans screen looking at the cameraHi, I’m Kelly George. I’m doing a Business Admin apprenticeship and my current role is Business Support Officer. Before I Joined HMRC I was splitting my time between an entry-level job with a large retailer and taking a home bookkeeping course. When I finish my apprenticeship I’ll have a Level 4 Diploma in Business and Professional Administration, an NVQ Diploma in Business and Administration and heaps of experience.

I applied for the Civil Service Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme as it is enables me to gain qualifications whilst I work and get paid a good salary at the same time. It is a great opportunity as we are also eligible to apply for a Civil Service fast stream programme on completion of our apprenticeship.

No two days the same

Before starting in HMRC I just assumed that I would be working in a customer-facing role in the tax side of the business, what else could I possibly do in HMRC? So I was surprised to be placed within the digital delivery part of the organisation, I had no idea of just how many different job roles there are within the whole of HMRC.

My work is varied and can be anything from responding to emails, organising and chairing project team conference calls, to going to training sessions, team catch-ups and workshops relating to my current project. With no two days being the same, it definitely makes work more interesting.

What I enjoy most are all the opportunities I have available to me along with the diverse range of activities I can get involved with. Everyone, not just apprentices, are actively encouraged to take training sessions to improve our knowledge and skills. I’ve got to know my co-workers both work-wise and socially, which helps to create a good work/life balance.

I work in a large office so my first challenge was learning everyone’s name! At the beginning I was a little overwhelmed with the amount of information there was to learn and the amount of acronyms everyone uses. I finished my first week with mixed emotions, I was worried I wouldn’t be capable of learning everything and carrying out my role successfully but I was happy with the lovely team I had been placed with. Fast forward to end of my second week and I was already picking up the terminology and had learnt a lot more about the types of work I would be involved with. I finished my second week feeling extremely lucky for the opportunity I have been given and excited for my future career prospects.

My proudest moment

My proudest moment has been organising, planning and chairing a particular conference call alongside another apprentice in my office. We had been tasked with tackling a project so had to outline our proposal to our project manager and governance team. The call was really successful, our ideas were accepted and we could progress with our plan.

I would recommend the Fast Track Apprenticeship Scheme to anyone who is looking to change career, especially for those with no opportunity for upward movement in their current jobs. The great thing about the scheme is that it is not just targeted at people leaving college, and the salary means that it is financially viable to those looking for a change of career later on in life too. Once in your role there are also options to join departmental talent schemes to further accelerate your career.

I’m now looking forward to successfully completing my apprenticeship and seeing where it takes me. With a great deal of change taking place, it’s an exciting time to be working within government, especially digital in HMRC, and I can’t wait to see what future opportunities await me!
