Headshots of the HMRC digital recruitment team
HMRC digital recruitment team

Hi, my name is Byron Beard and I am the Head of Recruitment here in HMRC Digital. I manage the awesome team who have played a key role in transforming and leading the way for recruitment in HMRC and the wider Civil Service.

The team was created 18 months ago with a clear vision and purpose: to proactively source and hire the right technology talent to make HMRC’s IT solutions fit for purpose and ready for the future. This has been no small task. We proactively source, contact and speak to individuals about opportunities with HMRC providing a point of contact rather than just a recruitment portal.

We talk to people about the wider context and benefits to working in HMRC digital and the Civil Service. We’ve also worked with our managers and leaders to move away from assessing competencies, instead making hiring decisions based on the technical skills required which allows us to attract and hire the right people.

This has helped us to build a greater awareness of HMRC Digital, create an online presence and brand via LinkedIn and specialist boards meaning that individuals are now proactively contacting my team wanting to work for us. This is a major milestone for the team.

And it has helped us to successfully hire over 900 individuals within HMRC digital to date which is a great achievement!

Why work for HMRC Digital?

Career pathway & skills development

We are a leading the way on the implementation of the DDaT (Digital, Data and Technology) Framework. This will mean anyone entering the Civil Service can understand exactly what they are able to achieve within their profession, including the development requirements to achieve this. Continuous development for our staff is key and something we promote.

Flexible working

Issues getting into work? School sports day? Dentist appointment? No problem! We are an advocate of flexible working and within HMRC digital we actively promote flexible working and using a common sense approach to every individual’s working week.

Job satisfaction

Our digital transformation is huge so the scope and breadth of work opportunities is equally massive. And the impact of our work benefits our millions of individual customers and businesses. You can really make a difference here.
